Selling to a dealer vs consigning — which pays more?
Bangkok consignment in 2026 pays 8–14% more than direct dealer sale on average (net of 10–18% fees) but takes 6–16 weeks. Direct dealers pay in 60 minutes at 76–88% of WatchCharts median. Consignment makes sense for Patek Nautilus, AP Royal Oak, and Daytona above THB 1.5M full set. Direct dealers win for Datejust, Omega, Tudor, and any urgent cash need.
How the two models differ
Direct dealer sale: The dealer buys your watch into stock and pays you in 60 minutes to 24 hours. The dealer absorbs all market risk — price moves, no-buyer-found, future discounts.
Consignment: The dealer holds your watch in their display, sells it under your ownership. You remain the owner until a buyer arrives. The dealer takes a 10–18% commission only when the sale closes.
Same watch, two paths: Submariner 126610LN
April 2026 — full set 126610LN (2023):
| Step | Direct dealer (Thonglor) | Consignment (Thonglor) |
|---|---|---|
| Time to cash | 60 minutes | 9 weeks |
| List price | — | THB 448,000 |
| Hammer / sale price | — | THB 442,000 |
| Consignment fee | — | 12% = THB 53,040 |
| Net to seller | THB 388,000 | THB 388,960 |
| Differential | baseline | +THB 960 (+0.2%) |
In this case, consignment isn't worth nine weeks of waiting. The numbers shift sharply with different references.

When direct dealer wins
Datejust 41 126334 (volume model)
Datejust supply is heavy in the Bangkok pre-owned market, and consignment listings frequently sit past the optimal selling window:
- Direct dealer: THB 238,000 (83%)
- Consigned at THB 285,000, dropped twice over 12 weeks, sold at THB 264,000, 14% fee = THB 36,960 → seller nets THB 227,040
- Differential: -THB 10,960 (consignment underperforms)
- 12 weeks vs 60 minutes — direct is the obvious choice
Omega Speedmaster 310.30, 2022
- Direct dealer: THB 138,000 (70%)
- Consigned at THB 180,000, sold at THB 165,000 after 16 weeks, 15% fee → seller nets THB 140,250
- Differential: +THB 2,250 — not worth the wait
Watches without box or papers
Watch-only consignment routinely runs 16–24 weeks with 2–4 price drops. Dealers with watch-only expertise tend to pay a fair number directly and faster.
Bangkok consignment fees, 2026
| Tier | Fee | Minimum value | Average time to sell |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auction House Thailand | 8–12% | THB 200,000+ | 4–8 weeks (auction cycle) |
| Thonglor / Phrom Phong specialist | 10–14% | THB 300,000+ | 6–12 weeks |
| Mid-tier dealer | 14–18% | THB 100,000+ | 8–16 weeks |
| Mall buyer | 18–25% | varies | 12–24 weeks |
Consignment risks
- Damage in display — verify the consignee's insurance (typically capped at THB 1M)
- Market decline during the wait — Daytona dropped 22% over six months (Jan–Jun 2024). A January list price often needed a June cut to clear
- Consignee shutdown — longer windows raise this risk (a 2024 case had a Bangkok dealer abscond, leaving 8 consignors out THB 14M total)
Decision matrix
| Scenario | Pick |
|---|---|
| Need cash inside 24 hours | Direct dealer |
| Patek / AP / Daytona full set > THB 1.5M | Consignment or auction |
| Datejust / Day-Date / OP | Direct dealer |
| No box / no papers | Specialised direct dealer |
| Omega / Tudor / Cartier | Direct dealer |
| Multiple watches | Split — top 1–2 to consignment, rest direct |
