FAQ

Can a tourist sell a luxury watch in Bangkok?

Tourists can legally sell luxury watches in Bangkok 2026. Licensed dealers accept passport + visa + Form TM.6/TM.30, paying THB cash up to THB 100,000 or SWIFT wire for higher values. Two cautions: (1) watches imported without customs declaration may face scrutiny on exit; (2) values above $20,000 USD trigger CF.106 Customs declaration when leaving Thailand.

Why tourists sell in Bangkok

Tourists from Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Australia, and Europe often choose Bangkok because:

  1. Better prices than Hong Kong for steel sport Rolex (5–9% higher)
  2. Lower transaction friction — Thai VAT 7% vs Singapore GST 9% and HK luxury tax 8%
  3. Deep dealer pool in commercial districts
  4. Fast process — 60–105 minutes door-to-door

Required documents

For the seller (tourist)

  • Passport (photo and biodata page)
  • Thailand visa stamp or Visa Exempt entry stamp
  • Departure card (TM.6) issued on entry, or TM.30 for long-stay
  • Hotel confirmation or accommodation proof
  • Outbound flight ticket for KYC reference

For the watch

  • Box, warranty card, factory accessories (if available)
  • Original receipt from country of purchase (helps establish provenance)
  • Service papers (if applicable)

Customs implications

Watches brought in on entry

Under the Customs Act B.E. 2560, travellers may bring personal items in for personal use without declaration. A watch worn on the wrist counts as a personal item — no import duty, no declaration.

Total value above $20,000 USD

AMLO measures for travellers — cumulative value of valuables brought in/out above $20,000 USD requires declaration on Currency and Bearer Negotiable Instrument Report (CF.106) at Customs.

Impact on watch sales:

  • Selling a watch isn't "exporting valuables" — you convert the watch to THB in Thailand
  • But if you carry THB or USD cash out exceeding $20,000, declare via CF.106 (no quantity limit, just declaration required)

Watches with "special import" status

If a watch was imported via duty-free channels and sold in Thailand, that's technically improper — but in practice, dealers with antiques-trade licences accept these transactions without challenge, as long as the seller is the legitimate owner.

Payment methods

Option 1: THB cash (≤ THB 100,000)

  • Immediate
  • Up to THB 500,000 can leave Thailand without declaration

Option 2: THB + USD cash (THB 100,000–1.5M)

  • Some dealers hold partial USD inventory; balance in THB
  • USD subject to CF.106 (> $20,000 declared)

Option 3: International wire (SWIFT)

  • Suited for > THB 500,000
  • Lands in your foreign account

High-value KYC

For transactions above THB 2M, AMLO requires Suspicious Transaction Report filing — not because anything is wrong, but documentation is mandatory:

  • Passport photocopy (all stamped pages)
  • Home country address
  • Proof of asset source (purchase receipt, gift letter, inheritance documents)
  • Receiving account for the wire

Records held by the dealer for 5 years; AMLO can request in exceptional cases.

Tourist playbook

  1. Contact ahead — get the indicative price before travel
  2. Prepare a document kit in your carry-on
  3. Pick a licensed dealer with track record — Conrad Time, Allu Thailand, Watch Brothers, Thai Watch Market
  4. As seller, don't release the watch before funds confirm
  5. Keep the receipt — useful for home-country tax filing (US, EU, AU tax capital gains)
  6. Avoid receipt-less shops — almost always unlicensed
