Pre-Owned Panerai in Bangkok — The Short Version

Set against 2026 Panerai Boutique Bangkok MSRP (PAM01392 ฿262,000, PAM00973 ฿355,000), the pre-owned medians sit at roughly 84% and 89% of retail. That is a shallower discount than most first-time Panerai buyers expect, and it is why the market catches people: a PAM01392 advertised at ฿120,000 with "100% genuine" in the caption is not below market. It has fallen out of the market entirely.

The ฿95,000 spread is not a movement story — both are in-house automatics with the same 3-day reserve. It comes from the rotating ceramic bezel, which makes the Submersible a real diver, and from 42mm fitting the average Thai wrist better than 44mm.
If your wrist measures under 17cm, try a Luminor 44mm on before you commit. Luminor lugs are thick and run straight rather than curving down, so the watch sits on the wrist rather than around it. It is the most common reason a Panerai comes back to market inside its first year — 6% of the PAM01392 sellers in our records were selling purely on fit.
Five Authentication Checks — In The Order We Run Them
Panerai fakes in Asia run from obvious to super-clone quality that passes anyone who has never handled the real thing. This is the sequence khun Tanapon works through on every piece.
1. PAM reference and serial on the caseback
Start at the back. A genuine piece carries the OP (Officine Panerai) logo, the reference — PAM00973, PAM01392 — and a serial number registered with Panerai.
What matters is not whether the engraving exists but how it was cut. Authentic engraving has sharp letter edges, real three-dimensional depth, and a consistent floor across every character. Fakes typically use shallow laser etching: edges bloom slightly, and depth drifts between the first and last character in a line.
Then send the serial to be checked against Panerai before you make an appointment to view. A seller who gets evasive about the serial has ended the conversation for you.
2. Sandwich dial — the decisive one
A Panerai dial is a sandwich of two plates: an upper plate pierced through in the shape of the numerals and indices, over a lower plate loaded with Super-LumiNova. The glow you see comes from beneath the dial, not from compound painted on top of it.
The ten-second test: tilt the watch to roughly 45 degrees under strong light. The 12, the 6 and the hour markers must read as wells — you should see side walls and shadow falling inside each opening. Most fakes print or paint lume onto a single-layer dial. Viewed straight on it looks identical. Tilted, it is flat and shadowless.
Second check: the edges of the openings are crisp and uniformly radiused on every numeral, because they come off one die. Fakes commonly show slight burring around the 6 and the 9, the two most complex shapes to cut.
3. Crown-lock lever — the check you do with your fingers
The U-shaped lever clamping the crown has been Panerai's patent since 1956, and it is the hardest part for a counterfeiter to reproduce, because what gives it away is spring tension rather than appearance.
Run it in this order:
- Open the lever — there should be clear initial resistance, then a single clean release. Not a gradual slide.
- Close it — one firm, audible, felt click. Fakes tend to give two or three gritty stages, or bind so hard you have to lever it shut.
- A locked lever must not move — push it gently with a fingernail. Genuine is dead solid; fakes usually have 1–2mm of play.
- Bridge proportion — compare bridge height against case thickness. Fake bridges are visibly off-scale when set beside a genuine piece.
If the lever feels "a bit loose but working fine", that is not a well-used Panerai. That is a spring Panerai did not make.
4. Movement finishing — get the caseback open
PAM01392 and PAM00973 both have sapphire casebacks. Use them.
- P.9010 (PAM01392) and P.900 (PAM00973) are in-house automatics introduced in 2014, replacing the modified-ETA OP III base Panerai had run for twenty years. Both give 3 days (72 hours) of reserve at 28,800 vph.
- Côtes de Genève on the bridges — stripes must be continuous, evenly spaced and running consistently in one direction. Fakes frequently print the pattern; under a 10× loupe there is no actual groove.
- Rotor engraving — the Panerai wordmark and caliber designation should be deep and sharply cut. Fakes are shallow and often slightly skewed.
- Seconds hand sweep — 28,800 vph is eight beats per second. If you can count the individual steps by eye, the movement is not what the seller says it is.
A seller who will not let you open the back or put a loupe on it has told you enough. Walk.
5. Strap, buckle and completeness
Panerai ships with an unusually complete kit for the segment — spare strap, strap-changing screwdriver, and the trapezoidal "Pre-V" buckle that is a brand signature.
A genuine buckle has real weight in the hand and smoothly chamfered edges. Fakes use thin stock with sharp edges. Original alligator or calf straps show consistent grain and even stitch spacing, with crisp interior stamping.
Completeness reads on authenticity, and it reads on price too: a Panerai with box, warranty card, screwdriver and spare strap is worth 8–12% more than a loose one.
Reading "Best Price" Listings
In the Bangkok Panerai market there are a limited number of honest explanations for a price under the range floor. Four, really.

That third row has a basis. Bangkok dealers pay Panerai sellers roughly 80–84% of market range. So a private listing below dealer buy price means the seller is accepting less than they could get by walking into a shop and leaving with cash the same afternoon. Nobody does that without a reason, and finding the reason is your job before the transfer clears.
"Special price" attached to "deposit required today" or "you can inspect it but not open the caseback" is always the same signal.
Where to Buy in Bangkok
Panerai Boutique Bangkok — Thai warranty and verifiable provenance, zero authentication risk, but new only at MSRP (PAM01392 ฿262,000, PAM00973 ฿355,000). Right for a first Panerai when you want no exposure at all.
Professional pre-owned dealers — PAM01392 and PAM00973 turn over regularly and there is 16–20% of dealer margin to negotiate inside. Shop warranties are short, and because Panerai sits in cabinets longer than most brands, dealers hold their prices firmly. Right when you know the reference and want it this week.
Paneristi Thailand and private sale — the best prices in the market, no middleman margin, and owners who usually know their piece in detail and include spare straps. Authentication is entirely on you with no recourse afterwards. Right if you are bringing an authenticator or have handled genuine Panerai before.
Bangkok Watch Auction — the one venue where Pre-Vendome and Early Vendome references (PAM00021, PAM00056, PAM00111) surface with any regularity. Buyer's premium applies and you need to read condition reports properly. For collectors hunting a specific reference, not first-time buyers.

The Luminor Marina is down only 7.6% from its 2022 peak; the Submersible about 13%. Both held up well against the broader luxury correction, largely because Panerai runs a single Bangkok boutique, so new supply is naturally constrained.
The practical read for a buyer: a curve this flat means waiting out a further correction is not worth the months. It also means that if you overpay by ฿40,000, the market will not quietly grow into your purchase price.
