How much do you lose selling a watch without box or papers?
Selling without box and papers in Bangkok 2026 costs you 15–25% on steel sport Rolex, 20–28% on Patek Nautilus and AP Royal Oak, 12–18% on Datejust/Day-Date, and 8–14% on tier-2 brands. The exception: vintage references over 25 years old lose only 5–10%, since original 1980s warranty cards almost never survive.
Why box and papers move the number
Original box and warranty card don't affect how the watch keeps time — they affect three resale levers:
- Provenance — A signed, date-stamped warranty card from an authorised retailer (Riviera Group for Rolex in Thailand) is the strongest single document proving the watch isn't stolen, isn't a grey-market parts swap, and isn't a Frankenwatch.
- The next buyer — Dealers price for who they're going to resell to. Across our internal data, 78% of second-pass Thai buyers actively refuse watches without papers, forcing dealers to absorb extended sell-through risk and discount upfront.
- Auction grading — Auction House Thailand classifies lots as "Full Set" (box + papers + factory accessories), "Half Set" (one but not both), and "Watch Only" (bare watch). Hammer prices across the three tiers diverge sharply.

"No box" vs "no papers" — not the same hit
You can split the damage:
- Box only, no papers: -10 to -14% on steel sport Rolex
- Papers only, no box: -6 to -9% on steel sport Rolex
- Neither: 15–25% combined (the table above)
Papers carry roughly 1.6× the weight of an empty box, because cards are harder to fake (holograms, Code 50 digital verification on 2020+ Rolex) and empty Rolex boxes sell on eBay/Chrono24 for THB 8,000–15,000 — they're a low-friction reconstruction.
The vintage exception
For Rolex references over 25 years old (16610, 16710, 14060M, 1675, 1680, etc.), original 1980s–1990s dealer paperwork almost never survives. The market accepts watch-only condition as normal, and the discount shrinks to 5–10% — provided the watch itself stays in high-originality condition (no refinished dial, conservative polishing). See refinished dial — a signal that moves price.
Paths forward if you don't have papers
- Triple-check the paperwork actually isn't there. Boxes-within-boxes in old safes, attic shoeboxes, parents' filing cabinets — found papers add 15–25% on the spot.
- Request Service Papers from Rolex Service Centre Riviera Group. If the watch ever went through service in Thailand, Riviera can issue a service confirmation document. Closes 6–10% of the gap between "no papers" and "papered."
- Accept the 15–25% discount and sell to a strong specialist dealer. Often nets more than chasing a private collector and getting refused repeatedly.
- Route to Auction House Thailand in the "Watch Only" lot category. Hammers run 8–12% above private dealer offers because the specialist collector base accepts watch-only at the right number.
How to avoid this for your next watch
If you're buying new now and might resell later:
- Store outer and inner box in dry, room-temp conditions
- Bag the warranty card, anchor tags, polishing cloth, and gasket grease tube together in a sealed plastic
- Keep the original retail receipt
- After every service, demand service papers — Riviera issues them on request
