Does changing the strap affect resale value?

Strap changes affect Bangkok 2026 resale by type: OEM replacement from Service Centre = no discount; high-quality aftermarket (Strapcode, Uncle Seiko) = -3 to -5% because dealers swap back; missing vintage period-correct bracelet = -12 to -22%; selling original bracelet separately nets a -8 to -15% deduction on the watch.

Why "original bracelet" matters

Professional dealers price the watch as a set — bracelet is a meaningful share of the resale value:

Reference Bracelet share of total price
Rolex Submariner (Oyster) 18–22%
Rolex Daytona (Oyster) 16–20%
Rolex Day-Date (President) 22–28%
AP Royal Oak (steel) 30–35%
Patek Nautilus (steel) 32–38%
Cartier Tank (leather strap) 4–8%
Cartier Santos (steel) 18–22%
Omega Speedmaster (steel) 12–16%

Patek and AP carry exceptionally bracelet-heavy pricing because the bracelet is integrated case architecture, not an accessory.

Five strap-change patterns and price impact

Pattern 1: OEM replacement via Service Centre

  • Send stretched bracelet to Rolex Service Centre Riviera Group → exchange for a new Rolex bracelet (new stamps, new serial)
  • Impact: no discount (could even be +2% for fresh bracelet)

Pattern 2: Keep original + wear rubber/leather aftermarket

  • Wear an alternate strap for daily use
  • At time of sale: refit original bracelet
  • Impact: no discount (sold in original config)

Pattern 3: Quality aftermarket (Strapcode, Uncle Seiko, ZRC) + no original

  • Original bracelet sold or discarded
  • Dealer has to source OEM replacement (THB 28,000–65,000 by model)
  • Impact: -3 to -5% (Submariner) to -8 to -12% (Daytona, Royal Oak)

Pattern 4: Low-quality aftermarket

  • Sub-THB 2,000 strap, visibly aftermarket
  • Clasp or lug fit issues
  • Impact: -5 to -8% on top of OEM bracelet sourcing cost

Pattern 5: Vintage bracelet swap out

  • Submariner 5513 / 1680 with original 9315 / 7836 / 93150 bracelet swapped for generic
  • Impact: -12 to -22% — collectors demand period-correct
  • Vintage bracelet replacement: THB 35,000–85,000 + 3–8 weeks sourcing

Real example: Submariner 116610LN strap swap

Seller's 116610LN (2017) full set wore Strapcode Endmill instead of Oyster bracelet (original kept):

  • Sold in original config (Oyster + Strapcode + Oyster refit at sale): THB 345,000
  • Sold watch-only with Strapcode + no Oyster: THB 285,000
  • Spread: THB 60,000 (17%)

If the seller sold the Oyster separately in a forum: THB 25,000–35,000 → net loss THB 25,000–35,000

Lesson: keep the original bracelet. Never sell separately.

Royal Oak with leather strap

Royal Oak bracelet is part of case design — leather strap requires AP-supplied adapters:

  • 15500ST with original integrated bracelet: THB 1,550,000
  • 15500ST with leather strap + adapter (bracelet retained): THB 1,540,000 (-0.6%)
  • 15500ST with leather strap + no original bracelet: THB 1,250,000 (-20%)

Cartier and other strap-default models

For Cartier Tank, Ballon Bleu, Pasha that default to leather, strap swaps are routine and don't deeply impact value:

  • Original Cartier leather → new Cartier leather (under 2 years old): no discount
  • Original Cartier leather → Hermès or premium crocodile: +1–3% (wear-appropriate)
  • Original Cartier leather → cheap aftermarket: -2 to -4%

Critical: keep the original Cartier deployant clasp and buckle — these matter more than the leather itself.

How to prep for sale

  1. Refit original bracelet/strap before photos and sale
  2. Have all worn straps available in the box ready
  3. Don't clean bracelet with harsh chemicals — dealers detect
  4. Keep empty bracelet bag with spare links — adds 1–2%
  5. Don't add aftermarket lume insert / hands / dial — that's a parts swap, not a "mod"

Original parts resale values

If you have surplus original parts (extra bracelets, etc.):

Part Used market value
Rolex Oyster bracelet 904L (modern) THB 32,000–48,000
Rolex Jubilee bracelet 28,000–42,000
Rolex President bracelet yellow gold 285,000–425,000
AP Royal Oak bracelet steel 15500 180,000–245,000
Patek Nautilus bracelet 5711 250,000–350,000

Send photos via LINE — tell us whether the original bracelet is retained, and we'll quote both scenarios.
